Central Queensland’s Gemfields are a place where you may catch gem fever. They are situated approximately 54 km’s from Emerald and cover around 850-900 sq. kilometers. We are nearly half way between Rockhampton and Longreach. It is exciting to go fossicking and many great sapphires have been found by fossickers and also the local miners who spread their claims throughout the district. Check out the houses built from billy boulders.
The Sapphire Gemfields have designated fossicking areas, (these are included in your visitors pack) where you may be lucky!!!
You can explore the underground mines, book a self-drive fossicking tour or visit some of the Gem Shops that have fossicking available to try, the advantage for you with these activities is that you can learn how to recognize the rough sapphires and sieve. When you find your sapphire there are local Gem Cutters to facet and setting is also available.
It is a place that remains in your memory so let’s look at a few of the places to visit.
SAPPHIRE the town has been mined since to late 1800’s and left its mark as you will see with the gravelly landscape and the ‘mining dunes’. Fossicking areas in Sapphire include ‘Graves Hill’ and ‘Big Bessie’. Petrol and Stores available at Sapphire.
There is a lot of history here and the Australian Miners Historic Museum is on the way to Rubyvale to show the detail.
Rubyvale also has he BIG PO Box!!! But that isn’t all as there is The Rubyvale Hotel, (with log cabins) Tennis Courts (Bush Courts), The Gem Shops and Grocery Store with Petrol and also the Post Office. Middle Ridge is a designated fossicking area near here.
Back at the Capricorn Highway we cross and head toward Anakie where ‘Gemfest’ is held in August and also the Interpretive trail where you can follow the history and the historic Railway where the initials of the first soldiers to leave the area carved their initials in the bottle tree there and are still able to be seen.
Willows Gemfields is approximately 24 kms west of Anakie along the Capricorn Highway The Willows Gemfields is a popular fossicking area and tends to have green and yellow sapphire there, one famous one being a 332 carat rough yellow, aptly named the “Golden Willow”. Glen Alva is a fossicking area of shallow digging near The Willows Gemfields.
So in all a fabulous way to spend some time, meet with the friendly locals and maybe find some great sapphire o take home.
